The point is that they aren't invulnerable demigods or superhuman or anything.
But they are legendary and they have earned their status. It doesn't matter what you say, they have proven themselves as the best of what a channeler can be. They survived among thousands of evil channelers in a situation where murder was actively encouraged. They are the smartest, most powerful channelers you can get and I would be terrified to face them. Mesaana isn't even one of the great dreamwalkers and yet she was more than competent to face a woman with a strong Talent. Moghedien shows aptitude with torture even though it's not her niche. They point is, as villains, they are all pretty well rounded. Let's put you into the year 5000 and tell you to survive.
And if I encountered them the way Egwene did, in an extremely advantageous setting, with a shit-ton of allies, some of whom claim superior skill in that venue to the Forsaken, PLUS a ta'veren friend wandering in dragging a mcguffin that prevents my enemy from retreating... Yeah, I'd pretty much EXPECT a victory, and be mortified if I couldn't pull one off.
Sure, if you can plan a good ambush. I've never said they can't be overwhelmed, but Egwene did fight Mesaana head on and you don't really think that's much of an accomplishment.
Egwene has had months of training in T'A'R from the best experts in the world, and has an innate Talent for using the place. Contrast that to Rand who took on a Forsaken with superior knowledge and training in T'A'R and was able to win, with only a single allied distraction, and no super-camouflaged Wise Ones or getting minions killed (it's an "atrocity" when Elayne loses cannon fodder, but when Egwene loses some of your so-precious channelers in battle, she's a great hero? ), or dreamspikes to trap Rahvin.
You mean the world's strongest channeler defeated people who are all weaker than him. Not only that but he bends the whole world around him. I wouldn't attack Rand with the Choedan Kal. He's invulnerable.

It's funny because I don't think the Forsaken have proven particularly effective either

I disagree ... The DO seems to have a plan and Moridin showed us he is following a prophesy

Up until the very end of TGS, wasn't the plan to turn Rand/make him do the DO's job for him?
