You know, I was absolutely certain we had an authour-quote on that, but I can't seem to find it. It's a bit hard to search for, since "Eye of the World" brings up anything related to the first book.

It is entirely possible that the men and women who made the Eye figured out that it was saidin touching the Dark One that caused the taint.
