I like "Wheel of Time", obviously, but I didn't know the series would be so long. If all the books existed before, I probably wouldn't have started to read the series. I like stories with tightly delivered stories and very purposefully executed plotlines, and WoT turned into a meandering pulp book which is not a bad thing, and from RJ's notes it appears that this is what inspired him, but I never liked that type of story.
I have a lot going on with real life and escapism via fantasy just doesn't appeal to me to the extent that it did sixteen years ago. I've also stopped reading "A Song of Ice and Fire" and never bought the newest book, so this is more of a recent judgment.
I wouldn't call Brandon Sanderson's version of the story fanservice. It is always hard to execute the vision of another person's creation, especially from notes.
