I find it idiotic that Bain and Chiad are honoring the gai'shain thing with the Shaido. Did I miss something about that?
In my honest opinion, yes - you did miss something.
It's not idiotic at all - it's admirable, in its way. As Bain and Chiad see it, if they were to abandon the Aiel traditions surrounding being gai'sahin, they'd be no better than the Shaido who have abandon their traditions.
In other words, it matters not one whit to them that the Shaido have no honor, because it's not the Shaido's honor that is at stake, it's their own.
You can argue the merits of ji'e'toh and the customs & traditions that go with it all you want, but that's the Aiel way, and it's admirable that they adhere to those traditions regardless of the circumstances.
By the way, I'm not saying that strict adherence to rules/customs/traditions is always right. I'm sure we can devise exceptional circumstances in which abandoning them is warranted for the greater good. But, I definitely wouldn't consider Bain & Chiad's situation re the Shaido as an exceptional circumstance - it's a rather average circumstance, IMHO.

Nope. Gai'shain have to take it, no matter what. They can run and hide, presumably, but no fighting *NM*
