I can't remember which book mentioned it but at one point they do bring this topic up. I remember that it was said that in the past they didn't use the hand motions but once learned it was almost impossible to unlearn. Also, some hand motions were so obvious that one Aes Sedai could tell who had taught another a weave just based on the hand motions that continued to get passed on.
