I have a madcrazy theory about how Rand fulfils the Aelfinn's prophecy that 'to live, you must die'. It goes like this:
Rand and co are fighting the Last Battle. Present are Mat, Perrin and Egwene. Somehow - Fain, Demandred, stray arrow - he dies.
At this point the DO does something stupid, assuming the battle is won, and in some way makes himself vulnerable. The lightsiders fight on. Mat blows the Horn of Valere, summoning back the Heroes. Rand, himself bound to the Horn, appears with them.
They all fight and win the Last Battle.
Egwene, who has super cool tel'aran'rhiod skillz, manages to copy what Moghedian did to Birgitte - she rips Rand out of TAR and makes him live again. Prophecy fulfilled! He probably even gets his hand back.
(Rand then turns around and tells everyone he's done his job and they can all get stuffed. He retires and spends the next six hundred years on a tiny farm somewhere herding sheep)
