I'm 99% certain RJ is quoted as saying Taim is not a new Forsaken .. I'll have to look for the quote

In the Stone Be'lal had no reason to conceal his skill with the sword since he wasn't trying to conceal his identity, but instead trying to goad (and probe) LTT/Rand. If, however, he is Taim (or anyone else Rand's encountered) he'd thus have every reason to downplay and deny the same swordsmanship abilities he bragged about to Rand.
that makes no sense. If he's in a new body what possible reason would he think to need more misdirection? Plus Taim was clearly a decent General since he was actually beating Bashere in battle ... the assumption would be that he would be a swordsman.
It's entirely possible that Taim is simply a new Forsaken (since the symbols he's using are employed not by the Shadow in general or the DO specifically, but the Forsaken and only the Forsaken) but being Be'lal would explain his livery and a lot of other things. The biggest fly in the ointment there isn't Be'lals death by balefire, it's Bashere recognizing Taim and the implausibility of Be'lal employing a Mask of Mirrors to masquerade as Taim. He could simply have used Compulsion to MAKE Bashere remember him as Taim, but there are undoubtedly plenty of other people still around who'd recognize Taim and it's very unlikely Be'lal could hunt them all down and Compel to prevent exposure. If Taim's not Be'lal I imagine he's just Taim, because he seems far too stable and coherent to be Ishamael, who's become increasingly erratic and disjointed over time.
I agree, but who's to say that the DO didn't have Taim killed specifically for his body? Even bigger stretch huh
IMO Taim is a pawn of Moridin... he's wearing his colors, and the Gold (or is it Platinum?) inlay of fist on the doors seems to indicate the highest level, aka Moridin/Nae'bliss ... Demandred is also possible, but Taim seems to have more knowledge than most 3rd age people so it seems more likely to me that he was being trained by Ishamael before the events of the books started.

I appreciate you acknowledging the admittedly remote possibility of Be'lals return.

#1 reason (other that BF)I don't buy the Taim =Be'lal theory is Taim's disdain for the sword

That assumes Be'lal isn't smart enough to use a misdirection ploy.

While I agree that Taim is most likely Taim, I don't see Demandred as the mastermind here

Graendal's the most likely source of the DOs knowledge about Asmo, but thereby hangs the tale.

Who do you think will be the last Forsaken--Lanfear or Ishamael? *NM*
