They hold doughnuts. Cannoli Send a noteboard - 07/02/2011 08:08:56 PM
We currently know they do 2 things that are somewhat related:

1. Prevent gateways from forming within the area of effect.
2. Prevent TAR jumping across the spherical boundary of it's effect in TAR.

It's also quite possible that a dreamspike was in Rhuidean. Mat sees something when he enters the fog dome with Rand that sounds similar to what we see in ToM.
Rhuidean was also un-enterable via TAR and iirc, the forsaken couldn't gate into the dome.
So we can maybe guess that dreamspikes can be placed either in the real world or in TAR. A dome appears wherever the spike is placed.

That's just conjecture, of course.

To get back to the subject of the post, ToM, CHAPTER: 5 - Writings we have this exchange between Graendal and Moridin:

"You are close to losing favor, Graendal," he said, turning and holding a long, spikelike piece of metal, silvery and topped with a large metal head set with golden inlay. "I have found only two of these. The other is being put to good use. You may use this one."

"A dreamspike?" she said, eyes opening wide. How badly she'd wanted to have one of these! "You found two?"

He tapped the top of the dreamspike and it vanished from his hand. "You will know where to find it?"

"Yes," she said, growing hungry. This was an object of great Power. Useful in so many different ways.

"So many different ways" implies more than two, I would say. So, what else?
Note: The statement could just mean it could be useful is many different strategies rather than effects but i find the other question far more interesting.
