All the answers are somewhat feasible, but ANY Forsaken could have the same reasons as Graendal to go to 'see what happened', or to go to 'find angreal' etc etc.
I still see no particular reason why GRAENDAL would be the one who came, and not a DF or BA of hers. She could just as easily have inverted a gateway and sent one of them off to find out what happened. As for an angreal, I dont see it being worth the risk to her life with knowing she had at least 2 enemies literally able to come on her at any moment ie: Rand and Asmodean.
We havent seen the Forsaken leap on angreal as much as we all think they should. Moghedian could have stolen the Tower's white sa'angreal whenever she pleased and chose not to and neither did anyone bargain with her to get their hands on those angreal or sa'angreal.
To see what was happening, or to get an angreal are both weak motivations for her to come in person.
Yes, I realize she could have come there with Illusion and inverting her weaves and hiding her ability in Saidar, but often we've seen the Forsaken too lazy to bother with all 3 of these things, plus it seems that Graendal doesnt particularly like hiding her face or else she would have definitely used the MoM when Asmodean saw her.
The way the text is read, it seems like whoever killed him was there for a reason, they didnt fumble to kill him in the slightest and he seemed absolutely sure he was going to die in an instant, which seems like he thought the murderer hated him.
Keep in mind that immediately after he said "You?!" he screamed "Noo", so he couldnt have been seeing what she was weaving, he saw her and knew he would die. Would she REALLY have instantly thought to balefire him the second she saw him? It seems more in her character to shield him & interrogate him, or overwhelm him with Compulsion. Especially Compulsion seems like a first instinct for her, and she was able to get Moggy and Cyndane together that way.
It just doesnt seem like SHE would see him and kill him unless she planned to kill him which we know she didnt. On the other hand if he had ran into Lanfear then his reaction was totally appropriate as he thought she died and he was terrified of her.
Yes I know all the reasons why it's impossible for it to have been Lanfear, but it's also impossible that Graendal should have escaped the balefiring of her Palace and also the stupidity of Arangar not running when she felt Rand gathering all that Saidin is also beyond reason, so a story for Lanfear to have killed Asmo would still have been able to be concoted and be believable.

Isn't Jordan explicitly on the record saying it was an "attack of opportunity"? i.e., no motive.
