I don't think the visions have to necessarily have a purpose. They're a connection that the three ta'veren share, and if Mat finds himself thinking of Rand for whatever reason, then he is bound to see something. And that something can't always be a momentous occasion... Rand is human and needs food too, and there's nothing wrong with that being shown, especially when there's only a single sentence devoted to it.
Furthermore, and argument could be made for such a scene actually being very important, since it shows the bond between Rand and Min still there, and Rand's continued humanity.
