Or if Noal had played a larger role (in the series, book, anything). Would have been nice to have some emotion induced by the death not only in the readers but also if the characters had showed some more emotion about it.
One of the things that bugged me most about ToM were how BS (and the editors) allowed severals sentences to read "Mat looked at Mat and Thom." It felt like Noal was kind of the afterthought, no real purpose except to die there. His heroic death just felt forced and the lack of emotion, lack of any real concern or even pleasure that Noal died doing something he loved (being on an adventure, going down saving his friends) made it seem far too superficial. Just another tool in the wide world of WoT cast off just like Hopper.
Mat is supposed to appear very aloof to others but in his previous PoVs he has come off as a little more serious, with good luck and bad (Tylin(sp?)) and as a person who is actually pretty serious. Just like how Perrin is supposed to come off as slow and dimwitted to characters early on yet we find he is very thoughtful and personable.

You know there is a high degree of likelihood that one of them dies in the attempt.
We know Thom & Mo will likely marry (through one of Mo's viewings in the Rings, one of her questions, or one of Min's).
Did you honestly think Mo, Thom, or Mat would be the one to go?
