The BT chapters are placed at the end of ToM, yet the events seem to occur before most of the rest of ToM. Which is just poor form all around.

The dreamspike at the BT was activated very late in TOM (a while after Rand's epiphany). Several of the BT scenes, though placed late in the book, happened before it was in place, and before the Tower was reunited (The first Androl scene. the first Pevara scene). They take place shortly after Rand captured Semirhage and was in Arad Doman. Androl doesn't know where Logain has gone, because Logain last came under false pretenses to fetch Asha'man and send them secretely to Illian and Arad Doman. The men left at the Tower don't know this. They think (IRRC) that Logain came to fetch men to lead a scouting mission of some kind. That's what Logain apparently told Taim (he told Rand Taim had asked him many questions, and wasn't pleased by Logain's evasive answers about where he was going and what the Asha'man fetched for Rand were going) We know this because in the first Androl scene, the Tairen lord has been at the Tower only for a few weeks. He went to the BT with Logain in KOD.

The other Androl scene, when his gateways don't work, and when he goes to Pevara, take place well over a month later. The dreamspike was activated at the BT after Nynaeve's visit to get Lan's bond (within the first week after Rand's epiphany), and before the meeting at the fields of Merrilor. Brandon confused the whole thing with the Graendal-Moridin scene. It happens right at the beginning of the book and lets believe the dreamspike is already in place (and that Graendal gets involved with Perrin right at the beginning of his storyline). In truth, in the real chronology, the Graendal-Moridin scene takes place shortly before Rand's epiphany. Rand "killed her", moved out of Arad Doman, spent a short while in Tear then went to DM. Graendal got her dreamspike late in Perrin's storyline, very shortly before Perrin actually notices it's activated. Brandon may have made a mistake having Moridin say the other dreamspike was being put to good use. It wasn't activated yet at the time at the BT. It wouldn't be for a week or two. Perhaps Moridin had already given it to the BT and it just wasn't activated yet, but if it's the sort of confusing element Brandon really should have avoided considering his jumpy timelines (the same way he could have spared us the "rumours" the WT was reunited which were not true when Teslyn left....Egwene reunited the Tower only weeks later, shortly before Teslyn arrived there...)

With his extremely confusing timelines, Brandon has let many details fall by the wayside. Elayne learned about the Seanchan attacking the Tower from Egwene, but even in her "late scenes" (most of her storyline returns to a timeline before her meeting) she never even mentions it when she thinks about the threat the Seanchan represents. It's also unbelievable that Mat has still not heard about the Seanchan attack on TV in his scenes set after Elayne met Egwene (Elayne met Egwene shortly before Gawyn's visit to Caemlyn, even though that scene is much earlier in the book, and Elayne has afteward several scenes set before she meets Egwene... the meetings with Mat, the BA episode and so on)

Brandon even created a plot hole by accident with all his tampering, by having the "Rebels" be told by Taim of the presence of the Reds at the Tower and that they have precedence, and later be in communication with Egwene again, and yet the reunited Tower doesn't yet know where the Red Sitters have gone (Egwene doesn't mention it at all when she remarks the Red has named new Sitters because two are nowhere to be found and the third was BA), or that the Reds have secret plans for the BT!!! Once revealed by the rebels ambassadors to the Sitters, this would have become a big issue in the Hall and to Egwene, but Brandon totally overlooked the issue. It's perfectly conceivable Pevara never learned about the reunification, and isn't in contact at all with the Rebels. It's also conceivable Taim lies to her and hides the fact the WT is reunited, but we know the Tower envoys know both of the reunification and of the Reds at the BT, and Egwene/the Hall have managed to get in touch with them again. So.. .plot hole.

Another similar detail that has fallen by the wayside is Duhara. After she's met Egwene, Elayne would certainly have been told to watch out for exposed Black Sisters, which would have included Duhara. As if Egwene would overlook asking Elayne which AS she knows are in Caemlyn! Elayne would also have told Egwene about the escape of the BA in Caemlyn, when Egwene told her of the BA purge. Egwene never mentions this new development, and Elayne never mentions the BA purge. Brandon painted himself into corners over and over. He could never have Egwene mention any of the recent developments in Caemlyn she's heard of from Elayne because most of the Egwene scenes were in the book before these events were shown in Elayne's storylines...

Yet another plothole is that Elayne invented Mat to dinner with Thom, She made clear she intended to get from him the story about his wedding during that dinner... and then we never get to know if she succeeded or how Mat managed to hide it from her, with Thom at his side, all too willing to spread the story.. Then, we never heard of this issue again, not from Elayne being shocked Mat is a Prince or married to the Seanchan heir, nor from Mat... Brandon set it up for Elayne to learn at supper, then never returned to this issue.

Another plothole Brandon has created is by having Egwene and the Windfinder to the MoS make a bargain about an exchange of apprentices, and yet the fact Zaida is currently furious with the "kidnapping" of the Seafolk most promising apprentice (Talaan) by a sister (Merillile, who vanished) is not even brought up by the Windfinder. As if the SF would agree to any "exchange student" idea before this matter of Talaan was cleared out! (to say nothing of the fact that Brandon had Egwene sweeten the deal by offering to release the SF AS from the Tower... when the bargain with Elayne-Nynaeve already gave them back all the SF sisters.. This is clearly a mistake, because Brandon also had Egwene think she considered the possiblity to send these women to the SF as their AS teachers.)

TOM is really a book not to look too closely at...

Work? It seemed obvious the dreamspike wasn't in place yet when Androl made the mini-gw *NM* - 17/12/2010 05:05:20 AM 382 Views

Correct--no error. You can only make gateways to other locations within the dreamspike radius. - 17/12/2010 03:14:09 PM 685 Views
