I assumed there was no blacksmith involved

The only other way I can think of is if the blacksmith and the channeler were one and the same, but I doubt many Aes Sedai would also be master blacksmiths, even back in the AoL.
Egwene and Rand shaped metal into shapes they liked, didn't they? The Channeler would just form the lump into a sword shape.
The whole blacksmithing business is a bit too unrefined for the Age of Legend era. It's needed because 3rd agers don't have the means to heat metal enough to liquify it. Once your ovens are capable of reaching those temperatures your need for blacksmiths is gone (as it has in our world)
