Yes, the test was pretty harsh on Nynaeve as Saerin said but also understandable. Nynaeve is the most powerful woman in the history of the Tower which elicited a lot of consequences. It led to jealousy in some, but the Sitter probably really wanted to push her like no other to see if their poster girl was worth her inborn ability.
Then they should have thrown in more Trollocs and Myrdraal at her, maybe a worm from the Blight, maybe a Foresaken or two. You know, things that would have actually required difficult channeling from her.
As it was, their tests were laughably easy for Nynaeve to handle from the OP perspective (save Egwene's, where she actually faced odds like Trollocs and Darkhounds, actual useful stuff). Egwene even says so. Nynaeve is too advanced to have to need this test. Instead, they pointlessly tested her on her ability to leave children to die just so she could be called Aes Sedai. Well, she can't do that, and she is completely right to not do that. I'm sure Egwene would have done exactly the same things too, if maybe with bit more control of her facial expressions.
I've often thought that they press women according to their strength, especially because Moiraine was so hard pushed I wondered if Daigian would have survived.
But that isn't how they pushed Nynaeve. Nynaeve didn't even come close to failing because she couldn't weave well. From what we see, she wove phenomenally. Her "failure" was in not abandoning people who need help.
As for Egwene, I hated her in this book. I personally think she was written poorly and that he missed her character completely, but Egwene detractors will say she's become the bitch they've always known she is. She's become identical to Siuan Sanche in TGH which is tragic because I never thought it was her characters destiny i.e to be such a bitch you're not fun to read about.
I don't think her character was messed up, so much as the presentation. It made no sense that she was actually worried about the politics and not other issues. Frankly, I think this is because Egwene's storyline in tGS and ToM were to have happened in a more condensed manner, but Brandon had to add more to her story in ToM. Unsure what to add, he rehashed the old politics again.
I agree with you that Egwene seemed unnatural and odd in this book.
