I agree with moratcorlm that the sudden appearance of Lorstrum as the real power in Cairhien was jarring. We've never heard of this guy before.
And we had heard that the powers in Cairhien were Riatin and Damodred, then Taborwin and finally Saighan.
Elayne already had the full support of Damodred and Taborwin. The AS had the leverage to make Aillin Riatin go the way they wished. House Saighan had lost power with Colavaere's fiasco and didn't have much choice but to go the way of Dobraine and Rand.
You would also have expected Elayne to make use of Talmanes' house... he's the son of the High Seat, but still...
Elayne's claim wasn't a huge issue. Jordan had set it up so the opposition had melted behind the scenes by Dobraine's work, and the support of Caraline and the AS control of Riatin. Brandon simply overlooked all this.
