Damondred is not Elayne's House - Taringail married into House Trakand

So I don't think Elayne could've taken over the House Damodred.
Plus it was mentioned before that Caraline can accept Elayne on the Sun Throne, so she's already an ally in a way. She's still the High Seat of Damodred, I don't think that has changed, but the power of the House Damodred should be much lower now since Caraline's army was destroyed by that bubble of evil created fog in ACOS. It's still
About the holdings in Cairhien, I wondered about that too. But then I saw a mention by Morgase was that there are lands which are holdings to the queen or king of Cairhien which Elayne expected to take over when she gains the Sun Throne. Or maybe Elayne meant holdings inherited from Taringail, though those are unlikely to be big enough.
I don't think the Cairhienians came across as idiots this time, BTW, especially compared to many previous examples of political dealings in WOT. If it wasn't for Rand's support for Elayne, I'd agree that they gave up their own chances for the Sun Throne too easily. But they knew that they had to accept Elayne or face a pissed off Dragon Reborn, so they behaved reasonable and struck a deal.
I agree with moratcorlm that the sudden appearance of Lorstrum as the real power in Cairhien was jarring. We've never heard of this guy before.

Lorstrum Aesnan is most likely someone who won a contest to have his name in the book, sadly. *NM*
