They're just your average impoverished hardworking uneducated bottom class, on which all societies are built on. But they were free men. Slavery is defined by possession. Peasant typically refers simply to a farmer. The real reason peasants were so badly off was that they depended entirely on what small portion of land they owned or rented, and were exceedingly vulnerable to any number of plagues.

Now serfs, that would be closer to what you're thinking of.
The first rule of being a ninja is "do no harm". Unless you intend to do harm, then do lots of harm.
