It was never possible for 3000 years because the OP wasn't clean. There's also a fair bit of evidence to suggest that the Taint was far worse straight after the Bore was sealed, because LTT's 100 companions went instantly mad and the madness seemed to occur much faster.

My guess is that over 3000 years the Taint either weakened, or some small level of immunity was formed against it by evolutionary pressures.
