I think it's a comical story that is best treated lightly; if anything, it is fun because of the various little details that there are to keep track of - this is one of the few series where most sci-fi readers can have one or two characters to root for.

Evil is meant to lose and lose badly here, while Good gets its' rewards.

It's pure escapist fantasy.
