Byar was compulsed Comet Sedai Send a noteboard - 29/11/2010 12:46:01 AM
I also found it sad that Dain Bornhold (a good, albeit misguided man) was forced to kill his friend. Byar was probably not even under compulsion - imagine what he was going through. He finds a perfect Child of the Light (Galad) and sees him rise up to being Lord Captain Commander. Then Galad (his friend, mentor and trusted commander) backstabs the group by allying with a known murderer. I still find it hard not to empathize somewhat with Byar, and I find his death pretty tragic in a way.

I agree about the tragedy for Bornhold (but frankly thought it was a great cirlce-is-complete kind of scene). However, Byar was Graendal's last, well-placed tool to kill Perrin. He wasn't a Darkfriend, but he must have been under compulsion. Not from his first appearance in the series, but sometime later. Like Masema (altough I think Masema may have been mind-warped by Demandred, but maybe it was Graendal). His single-minded, irrational hatred of Perrin went way beyond the pale of sanity. He was the 'blasted Whitecloak' whose failure to kill Perrin was the final nail in Graendal's coffin.
The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo.
