Mesaana and Graendal's angreal:

Mesaana TRADED Graendal an angreal? I find that very unlikely, and out of character. Does that mean Mesaana had an angreal herself? All evidence up to now suggested the contrary.

Yeah, this is very strange. As you say, Mesaana did not appear to have one herself, and even if she did, would she really be willing to give up such a huge advantage over the other forsaken? I seriously doubt that.

That means that Lanfear's angreal at the Docks must have increased her strength AT LEAST six fold, and more like 8 or ten fold. No wonder she was toying with Rand in that battle.

Yes. With this knowledge, it is surprising that Rand was able to stand up to her even to the extent that he did. I wonder if he would really have been able to take her down anyway, despite this massive advantage, if he had embraced LTT's memories? If so, this would be a pretty big clue about LTT's skill.

I've read Sanderson's reply to the issue of tying off gateways, but frankly, his answer avoided the issue and talked about the logistical implications of Ashaman being able to tie off gateways necessitating that they not be able to do it.

Frankly, that's a non-answer. Rand has tied off gateways and Sammael has tied of gateways. It is clearly possible, and fairly easy, to tie off gateways. There is no logical explanation that has been given as yet as to why Grady and Neald are not able to tie off gateways. Sanderson needs to up his game here, or admit that he has changed the rules to suit his plot.

Whats worse is that Grady and Neald actually HAVE done that before. We see this in Knife of Dreams.

"Just tired a little, my Lord" Grady said wearily. He remained seated with his elbows on his knees. "All this Traveling we've been doing lately, Well, I couldn't have held the gateway open long enough for all those soldiers to ride through yesterday. That's why I've taken to tying them off."

"Well, as soon as you're done here, join Mishima. I want somebody keeping an eye on him. Somebody who makes him too nervous to chink they can change what they agreed to." He would have liked to tell Grady to tie off this gateway. It would make a short path to take Faile back to the Two Rivers. But if things went wrong today, it would make a short path for the Shaido, too.

So it is not just a case of Grady and Neald being incompetent, and being unable to do a simple thing with gateways. It is a fullblown retcon where they mysteriously lose an ability that they had before.

Was the Dreamspike what RJ was talking about when he said that there are ways to interfere with the creation of gateways into a battlefield zone, and ways to interfere with the interference etc?

However, I do not believe the Dreamspike is the ONLY way of doing this. I would think that there must be a One Power weave that can replicate this effect, and that it can be actively countered and counter-countered, if you get my meaning. Hence RJ's statement that the battle would be fought on many levels, on an Age of Legends battlefield.

I agree that ther are probably other ways of messing with gateways. The dreamspike, being a ter'angreal might just be one of the most effective, since being a device it has none of the weaknesses (such as growing tired, etc) of humans.

I do wonder if Rand now has the ability to create wards against gateways, and replicate the dreamspikes effect with just OP alone. I would think so, given that he has LTT's memories, and LTT has been implied to be pretty good with gateways.

I still wonder if that will come into play with the Seanchan. Even if there are ways to break through LTT's gateway wards, the seanchan damane would not know them. I wonder if Rand could use that against them when they attack the White Tower. He could let their armies through, then create a ward trapping them in Tar Valon or something, and perhaps then lead his own armies to the greatly weakened Ebou Dar, while the Seanchan could not follow.

That would mean abandoning Tar Valon to the Seanchan though, I doubt Rand would do that. But it might work in other places. It might also work if Rand manages to capture Tuon and the rest of the Seanchan nobility and use them as hostages to force the Seanchan in TV to surrender.
