Elayne composed herself and sat. "I cannot allow this. The Houses are all looking for opportunities to shoulder their way into power."
"You would be doing the same in their place, I warrant," Dyelin said.
"Not if I knew the Last Battle was approaching," Elayne snapped. "We need to do something to direct the nobles toward more important matters. Something to unify them behind me, or at least convince them that I'm not to be toyed with."
"And you have a means of achieving this" Dyelin asked.
"Yes," Elayne said, glancing eastward. "It's time to seize Cairhien."

"The world needs unity," Elayne said, standing. "With Cairhien I begin knitting us all together. Rand already controls Illian and Tear, and has bonds to the Aiel. We're all connected."

"The world needs unity," Elayne said, standing. "With Cairhien I begin knitting us all together. Rand already controls Illian and Tear, and has bonds to the Aiel. We're all connected."

Those ellipses all represent a paragraph, or so I assume I should call them even though one is as short as "Oh". Now, this happens in most cases in Elayne's chapters, she finds something she can do for her or Andor's prosperity, and then, much later, rationalises it as being good for the Last Battle. However, I chose this specific example because it also illustrates a few more things.
First, you like to claim that the conquest of Cairhien was for the good of fighting the Last Battle. As you can see above, it was not. Elayne wanted Cairhien to keep her vassals' minds off the fragility of her rule. She admits this.
Second, the initial point of my thread. In one breath, Elayne complains about her vassal nobles attempting power grabs in the face of Tarmon Gai'don. In the next, she expresses her solution to this problem: make a power grab in the face of Tarmon Gai'don.
Third, you claim that adding Cairhien to the Andoran empire is great because it will allow them to fight more efficiently in the Last Battle. Forgetting everything else about that, it therefore makes sense that she would also want to join with other nations to form an even greater united empire, wouldn't it? And yet, at the very end of that chapter Elayne thinks that "she didn't intend to see Andor become merely another part of the Dragon's empire." So if you were correct, doesn't this display her arrogance and pride and desire for power that she is un willing to join Andor to this empire that would so improve their ability at the Last Battle?
That was a rhetorical question, incidentally. Don't expect a reply on my part, there are plenty of people on this site who feel that they can substitute facts and rational thought for personal insults, and I don't really see the interest or value in continuing this conversation.

So about the nobility.

Thank you. I couldn't put a finger on why that bothered me.

I don't have any problems with this - they are trying to get more power to survive.

If that power is needed to survive, how will those she takes it from survive?
