Up until now Slaye has been ho-hum.
Yeah he is the Shadows assassin, but he hadn't done anything to make people care about him. He was just a character running arounf TAR that Perrin was going to have to deal with.
Now he has been invilved in a majro bad ass fight, and done something that makes people care about his fate.
That was the purpose of Hopper's death.
