From the time I first read Eye of the World I never felt that at the end of it all the Dark One would win the day. No matter what, the light was going to find a way to stop the shadow. It was not a matter of if the light was going to win but how it was going to win.
With that being the said, I have a hard time seeing how Brandon Sanderson is going to convey just how bad a situation the forces of the light are currently in. He could have Rand go stark raving mad, Egwene officially convert to a darkfriend, Mat decide to focus on getting help for his gambling problem, Perrin decide to get in touch with his inner wolf, Nynaeve lose her braid in a freak scissor accident, and have Elayne receive a debilitating chin accident, and I would still expect the Dark One to get put back in his hole at the end of TG.

All good things come to those who wait.
