C.E.N.S.O.R.E.D. :P Toviene Ghazal has been channeling for more than a hundred years. Yet, she doesn't feel that Logain has shielded her. What's your explanation for that?
And the beauty is...it wasn't just Toveine Gazal. IIRC, there were a total of five (!!) red sisters in that party. All experienced Aes Sedai -not tired or distracted-, but just riding their horse in the snow full-well realizing they were closing in on the Black Tower!
And they were -all- Shielded without even realizing it untill they tried to reach for the Source!

Woop woop!

Add the Nyn, Asmo & Siuan Shieldings to the mix..and the case is closed.

Of course there is a difference between feeling the actually shield and simply realizing that you have been cut off from the source. Sort of like knowing the door in front of you is closed and pushing on the door to see how thick it is.

But Rand is never able to feel the shield unless he's pushing it. Why else did he keep pushing it to test for weakness? Why not just "sense" it?
Darius, your analogy is fundamentaly flawed to start with, because there is no "knowing the door is closed", untill you push it!

You somehow keep immagining it as a wooden door a Channeler can somehow 'see' without touchting. But a better analogy would be envisioning a perfect glass door without frame. You have to actually bump into it in order to realize it is there.
There IS no seeing that door, only feeling it, by touch. It's the same for the Shield.

I'm not ignoring anything, I just think there are plenty of alternative reasons from the points you are bringing up. I'm simply saying one gasp from Aran'gar doesn't mean that Graendal cut her off while she was already holding the Power. There are other feasible reasons.
I think it's the most (and only) logical assumption. In fact, I'd hardly call it assumption. Please give us some of your 'other feasible reasons'?

Maybe you're right, but the sensing without holding the Source is a dead horse (mule? :P) you're pulling.

Cheerio,
Mik
