Re: my gut says it's not Talmanes, because putting his death as the answer to a cliffhanger

seems kind of cheap. Does that make any sense or am I just trying to make myself feel better? Doing a character's death that way, when people sort of care about him, is kinda like punching us in the face. If it's a lesser character then it's not a big deal. I'm not actually saying it would make me mad, it just seems more like something to make us worried that it's Olver or Talmanes, but it won't end up being either of them.
That's probably not a cliffhanger, though. This looks more like a narrative bridge to chapter 9.
I really doubt it's Talmanes, though. When Mat goes to Ghenjei, Jordan will need a commander for the Band (especially since it's likely to take place at the book's climax and the event that starts TG, likely a battle in Caemlyn that even seems foreshadowed in this chapter, might be ongoing at that point). It sounds unlikely to me Jordan would kill Talmanes at this juncture. Estean would be more believably expandable, but *shrug*, it sounds unlikely too. Why put new characters in charge now, when TG is about to start?
Olver is also most, most unlikely. Too dark for RJ to massacre an urchin boy. If any character is likely to survive TG unscathed and live an happy life after, it's little Olver...
Lopin seems by a longshot the most simple solution for the victim.

Noal's on the book cover, unless they found another old man to go with them to ToG

Killing Olver off in a bloody manner would make the series much darker than it has been, IMO. *NM*

It was OK - definitely improvement over how Mat's POVs ran in TGS
