I would say it had more to do with either ensuring that the Dragon had descendants, but if the Pattern had arranged for it, there are most likely multiple factors. Perhaps this was done to ensure that the Dragon could be Reborn the next time he was needed.
The first rule of being a ninja is "do no harm". Unless you intend to do harm, then do lots of harm.
