I don't recall RJ every saying they were separate ... for some reason I thought he had given us an Aes Sedai answer when asked
Q: The question is, with Rand and Lews Therin, do they have one soul or two souls in the body?
RJ: They have one soul with two personalities. The reincarnation of souls does not mean reincarnation of personalities. The personality develops with each reincarnation of the soul. This is the cosmology that I [cobbled] together.
So basically, the soul that is in Rand now, is the exact same soul that was in LTT. But when a soul is reborn, he or she forgets all the memories of the past life, which naturally leads into developing a new personality that is different from the old personality, but the "energy" of the soul is always the same.
So basically Rand and LTT are two facets of the same soul, but because of different upbringing and life experiences their beliefs, memories, experiences and the personality that results from those were different.
However it seems that at the end of TGS, the two facets (LTT and Rand) of the single soul seem to have sorta merged so that presumably there is only one personality now.
But it was in a context about was LTT "real" or was he simply a figment of Rand's imagination. I thought you were saying there was a quote that definitively stated that LTT was not "real" in Rand's mind.
I tend to think LTT was likely some kind of persona Rand built as a coping mechanism for all the stress in his life, and that the memories he was slowly starting to inherit became a distinct personality that Rand identified as LTT. Of course it was LTT in effect because all the memories pretty much recreated the man.

Why is LTT "gone" from Rand's mind now?
