OK, I'll buy Vandene teaching it, but not learning it from a written description *NM*

There's not a hint she thinks outside the WT box on this matter, and developped any proclivity to "figure out" new weaves.
That came only with the wondergirls and the barebone AS training that didn't suffice to brainwash them and burn in their brains the notion that one must never attempt to experiment anything with the OP.
Nynaeve "intuitive" knowledge of balefire is however "magical" (Nynaeve's intuitive talent is mostly if not strictly resricted to her main Talent area, much like Elayne). It actually came from her Accepted test, in which she just knew balefire - and anything weave she sees once, she can make again. She forgot it - repressed the memory that is - blocked it, then she intuitively remembered it later. There were a few scenes where Nynaeve had weird feelings about balefire, before the memory came back to her, much like she forgot her fears to embrace saidar when she's angry.

How were all these amazing weaves 'lost' ?

You're right. It is merely a plot requirement, made ludicrous by the ease of mastering these weaves

These are good points. To some extent, it may be because our main characters are "gifted" channelers

The bigger problem is minor characters copying the weaves so quickly...

All I'm saying, is that Travelling would STILL be a very usefull survival tool during the Breaking..

If you go back and read the descriptions of the breaking, and think about the 3000 year cycle

I don't think that creating cuendillar and 'angreals was common knowledge.

You & Ryan make good points, esp on balefire/compulsion. In a shorter series, it'd make more sense

That's because most of the major people in WoT are powerful channelers.
