The DO also wants to break free of the pattern. He hates it, because of its dichotomous nature. At least, that's how it seems. The DO does not need our saidin and saidar to subsist. He is above and beyond the duality that governs our world and thus wants to destroy the pattern and break free.
It is said that "The DO was trapped outside the pattern at the moment of creation". Perhaps the pattern is his prison? Maybe "breaking free of his prison" and "destroying the pattern" are one and the same action?
(Forgive me if this is an old or obvious theory. I normally don't think about this aspect of the series very much.)
