Also, these color swirls only happen at random, when they think about each other, not when one of them does something. The swirls about the Cleansing happened because channelers around Perrin and Mat could feel the huge amounts of the OP being channeled, so both of them thought of Rand. They might see the events with Semi and the collar only if something makes them think of Rand at that moment.

Not exactly. At the time of the cleansing, they had had swirls of colour but not full visions yet. Cleansing was the first time when Mat and Perrin actually saw or felt Rand, and in both times it is made clear that they did not actually think about Rand. The colours appeared on their own, presumably due to the magnitude of the event that was happening. I figured that channeling the True Power might also qualify as a major enough event for the pattern to forcibly show Mat and Perrin what was going on, regardless of what they were thinking at the time.

I also wonder what effect it might have. Since TP opposes and damages the pattern, and it is likely the pattern and ta'veren that is creating the visions, I wondered what would happen when Rand used TP. I could for example see the colours which used to be a rainbow turning entirely black for Mat and Perrin or something to signify that something has gone horribly wrong.

On and some quotes:

Joline went on arguing, but he did not bother to listen. Whenever he thought of Rand or Perrin, colors swirled in his head. A part of being ta'veren he supposed. This time, he had not thought of either of his friends, but the colors had suddenly been there, a fan of a thousand rainbows. This time, they had almost formed an image, a vague impression that might have been a man and a woman seated on the ground facing one another. It was gone in an instant, but he knew as surely as he knew his name. Not the Forsaken. Rand. And he could not help wondering, what had Rand been doing when the dice stopped?

Mat only thought that someone was channeling, but he did not actually suspect Rand which is explicitly said, but the colours where there anyway.

She understood fighting over water. Most fighting in the Waste started with water. "But I do not think — "

The colors erupted inside Perrin's head, an explosion of hues so strong that sight and hearing vanished. All sight except for the colors themselves at least. They were a vast tide, as if all the times he had pushed them out of his head had built a dam that they now smashed aside in a silent flood, swirling in soundless whirlpools that tried to suck him under. An image coalesced in the middle of it, Rand and Nynaeve sitting on the ground facing one another, as clear as if they were right in front of him. He had no time for Rand, not now. Not now! Clawing at the colors like a drowning man clawing for the surface, he—forced—them—out!

Sight and hearing, the world around, crashed in on him.

" ... it is madness" Grady was saying in worried tones. "Nobody can handle enough of saidin for me to feel that far off! Nobody!"

The context here is that Perrin was in mid discussion about water and the shaido, and the colours actually appeared BEFORE the channelers around him warned him that someone was channeling. He learned about the OP-beacon from Grady only AFTER the vision was already over. It was made clear that he did not think of Rand and that the colours were basically forced on him by the pattern.
