I think that was the line of thought of some who willingly join the shadow in the war of Power. The word Freedom always carries a lot of weight.
But as the war turn uglier and uglier, the "good" shadow guy were long dead or has left the ship since the DO did not have any moral code. He is all about the result since "freeing humanity" means to destroy. ( or the good shadow guy just realise that freedom lies in death and maybe not even there... and left the cause)
Than the common evil human saw a short cut to power and blind themselve to the true goal of the DO, wich is basicly to destroyed everything. So they rise and fall, create trolloc and kill kill kill....
