Ishamael - A great philosopher before the fall. He wrote the defining philosophical texts of the Age of Legends!
He argued passionatly in the hall of servants, explaining his reasons for turning to the shadow.
He acknowledges that Lews Therin, the populist politician, is the champion of the light. He realises that Lews Therin as with all things in WOT requires a counterpoint in the pattern, a dark champion.
He, like Harod Fell, he understands the circular nature of the pattern. He knows that the dark ones prison has been sealed and bored many times before and that the cycle is endless.
His stated goal is to shatter the wheel of time on the day of return.
I think, Ishamael has decided himself to fulfil the role of dark champion that the pattern requires. I believe the reason he did this is, that he foresees that on the day of return he will ensure that the wheel is broken and the darkone sealed.
This will end the cirular nature of the wheel. allowing bith him and the dragon to finally die.
