I've joked about that being a possible motive before...

...and yet every time I stop to wonder if it could be true. I kind of like the idea.
I think if it is never disproved in the books, I'm sticking with it, mainly because I've always liked Moridin. Sure he does evil stuff, but in his mind, it's all for the ultimate greater good.

Is that supposed to be Ishmael's motive? In some ways that all most sounds like some of the more radical forms of Buddhism taken to their extreme. Life is hell and the best thing you can hope for is not to come back (I think Nirvana was thought of in early Buddhism as simply non-existance though it has evolved since then). As such maybe the best thing to do would be to give Nirvana (non existance) to all of humanity. Knowing Robert Jordan, I could see him doing that. We know he is familiar with eastern religions and he was a fairly devout Christian...
Because if there was any other way, Ishmael would have tried it. Unless he is really that altruistic that he wants to help all humanity escape their horrible torment, and not just himself.

Might as well throw "Becoming a Grey Man" up there, but nothing short of a free DO could do it, IMO.

Yes, Aran'gar mentioned in KoD that Aginor created those creatures in the AoL as servants.
