Could just be a simple trick that all the Forsaken know. Not so much a matter of experience and control, but just, "Oh hey, remember to do [blank] after you channel pure evil."
The problem with that explanation is that if its a simple trick it would presumably have been taught to Taim. I mean going around with a dark halo is not exactly conductive to maintaining the illusion that he is a loyal lightsider.
