I have a hard time believing that the new sword will play any more role than just as an eventual gift to Tuon. In this way it might help to "bind the Nine Moons" and whatnot. However, I tend to think that it is a little too easy and convenient that a plot device such as Hawkwing's sword could show up in what was intended to be the last book of the series and then play such an important role in winning the last battle.

Why bring us this new sword so late in the game when Rand has had a perfectly good "blade of light" since book 3?
