It has exactly the same effect, but is just an indirect rather than a direct consequence of physical distance.
Yep.
I would assume that physical locations are directly linked to corresponding areas of the Pattern - given that the threads of the people living in a city would be interwoven closely together in the Age Lace as well - an example would be the thousands of threads burned out when a city is balefired.
I agree. What I was trying to say is ... you suggest that the DO can capture souls at pt.A (closer to SG) easier/quicker than pt.B (farther from SG) because there are more threads to search through at radius B than at radius A (from SG). A very "physical" explanation.
Whereas, I was suggesting that the DO can capture souls at pt.A easier/quicker than pt.B simply because he has more influence at pt.A than pt.B, and therefore more "Pattern visibility" at pt.A than pt.B. That greater visibility may be a function of distance from SG, but whether it is or isn't, I think there are other factors too, like the idea I proposed. A more "metaphysical" explanation.

When I said distance, think of it as "radius" and the no. of threads within that radius...

I think it's absurd to think relative distance to SG is a factor:
