Because that's how most dreams that I remember feel. They feel real, but they're not reality. Don't really know how much better to put it.
You don't know it's fake, just that it's not... really real?
I don't know. I can't really think how to put it.
Movies and book make people emotional all the time. Now we're talking about a virtual reality that seems to be keyed into their psyche. Doesn't sound too far-fetched to me.
And one in six really? The fear in Nynaeve's first one could cause some tears, though I think Nynaeve came out mostly angry. Her second one doesn't sound like much to me, but I guess she was just really dedicated to her village, and it pained her to see the people she loved in such a terrible position.
Egwene's first one doesn't surprise me. She was married to her childhood sweetheart and had a daughter, whom she then abandoned. Her second, she was scared and then had to see her childhood sweetheart in pain, was completely unable to help him, and unwilling to kill him, even though he wanted it. Then she had to abandon him again. That'd cause a few tears. And her third one had lots of fear and ended with abandonment again.
No, I'm not too surprised that they bring out emotion and tears.
And Nynaeve's first test wasn't a choice between leaving and an eternity hunting a Forsaken. She wasn't looking at an eternity, just thinking about finishing that job. She wasn't looking ahead much more than that. The test doesn't have to give them a whole life to commit to, it really just has to distract them for a minute or two.
My last post was not quite what I meant. I think the test does all it can to convince them that it is real, and usually succeeds, but they know it isn't reality, if that makes any sense. It really sounds like a lucid dream of sorts.
See, I view this as a contradiction. If it convinces you that it is real, then you can't know that it's fake, because we just affirmed you were convinced it was real.
You don't know it's fake, just that it's not... really real?

As far as I'm concerned, if I believed it was fake, I wouldn't come out very emotional... maybe Nynaeve's final test could cause some difficulty, even knowing that it's fake, but that's one in six. There's no way Nynaeve would have chosen to spend eternity running after a Forsaken in a maze if she knew it was fake.
