A nice article about the Old Tongue and my ramblings Lordling Send a noteboard - 18/06/2010 11:14:24 AM
Generally I don't have too high an opinion about the WoT wiki, but this seems to have been made by someone who knows what they're talking about. A bit short, but it's not as if there's much information to be had.

..............
And now, a snarl of thoughts:

Birgitte's OT phrase to Mat in the CoS seems to indicate that nosane means (we?) speak.

Aginor's original name was Ishar. Seems to me that feminine names can be made from masculines by adding -a. Ishara was the founder of Andor.

A bit odd how all the names of the great cities during the Compact of the Ten Nations seem all to have had a meaning in the OT. An example: Manetheren means "Mountain home" and one of its cities was Corartheren. Cor is probably night (Cor darei, Night Spears) and Theren sounds more like mountain than home. Night Mountain? Theren is pretty close to Therin, as in Lews Therin.

Three of the names of the Ogier Steddings end in -toine. Stedding itself might mean "dwelling" or something.

I hate seeing patterns when there probably aren't any. But..Tel Janin Aellinsar was Sammael's original name. Tel is also present in Tel'aran'rhiod, and -ael in is Sammael. One of the Ten Nations, Aelgar, also has Ael in it. As does Asmo's fake name Natael. Perhaps Moiraine became suspicious of Asmodean because his name is a pun, meaning "lost hope" or something. Perhaps Lanfear likes puns as much as Sammael.

So, ael is the word meaning hope? Mael might be a way of spelling M'ael, like in the words M'hael (again with the ael. Perhaps RJ just liked the sound) and M'taal.

Siswai'amam meaning a spear owned by the dragon, dragon could be aman. Somewhat like amon in Telamon. And tel is also a word.. So in two instances the "third name" which the awardee himself chose bears some semblance to the "honorific" they received. AELlinsar..sammAEL, telAMON..Aman.

Maravaile..Mar also being present in Mar Ruois (a city during the AoL) and Aile meaning Isle.

I can't think of an example but I think Dar is a word too. What could Ebou Dar mean?

How would one translate the name of the Palace in Chachin, Aesdaishar. The shine of all?

This is definitely more interesting than dissing/exalting Lanfear and about as useful. I'm starting to feel as sensible as the guy who very regularly makes post at the 13th depository. Ridiculous connections and all that. :D
