Jordan (and now Sanderson) needed to employ someone to keep track of who was who, when what was happening, etc. I think that the sheer volume of characters will inherently detract from the depth of any one.

However, Sanderson has brought a bit more depth to the series. I hope the last two books give us a bit of depth. At the very least, some serious psychological issues during the Last Battle would be helpful.
