I think Rand is the greatest.
We completely disagree about "greatness". For you it's all about deeds, and for me it's even more about who the person is.
I'd say his greatness stems from his ability to route the Shadow. He's destroyed most of their generals, which makes him a man worthy of legend.
Which you confuse with greatness, IMO.
Beside, let's get real:
- Rand survived Be'lal because Moiraine killed him for Rand.
- Rand survived Sammael because Moridin interferred
- Rand survived Rahvin because Nynaeve distracted him
Never trust legends...
As evidence by what? Mierin was not obscure. She was not world famous but she was respected by her colleagues.
How does that differ from being obscure, exactlty? You think the hordes of anonymous scientists working in the top facilities in the world right now aren't obscure to anyone but the people in their field?
She had flaws which the ultimate evil could work upon to win her over.
Evil didn't work upon her, she went to the Shadow on her own. RJ was extremely specific about this. He didn't want people to feel sorry for Lanfear, or make apologies for her flaws and her bad choices.
That's the exact same story for the other 12.
Not what I meant.
As opposed to Semirhage's altruism, or Be'lal's humility?
What does that have to do with anything? I wasn't saying Lanfear is the worst of the Forsaken, I was speaking of her narcissism.
I don't see how saying she was no worse than the other 12 makes her a better woman anyway.
There's no evidence for that. We don't know that details regarding the drilling, or their precautions or thoughts at the time.
The fact speak for themselves. You can keep your delusion it was a perfectly reasonable scientific venture if you want to. The facts remain they didn't know what they were doing and it went terribly wrong, and obviously they did nothing to repair their mistake, didn't understand how dangerous what they had done was, or what they attempted didn't work. Over a century later, the top Aes Sedai of the Age were still at loss on how to deal with it. Posae wanted to shield the area until a permanent solution could be found.
Beside, this all came from a hubristic thirst for more power, that the Age didn't need. With the Bore, Jordan created a metaphor for hubristic science.
