It's clear that she was essentially a nobody in the AoL. Some obscure beauty that briefly played the role of arm-candy to an important man and couldn't deal with him moving on... so much so that she even disrupted his wedding! This act alone was probably absolutely SHOCKING in the AoL when people were far more harmonious and seemingly reserved.
LTT mentions her power/fame obsession, Graendal makes fun of her for it and RJ basically built her character around this obsession.
Personally I think she's got one of the stupidest reasons to have become what she did. She essentially became a complete monster, lacking anything resembling humanity because a guy broke up with her ... boo, hoo! At least Semrihage was legitimately ill!
