The post below got me wasting time thinking about Asmodean again and I remembered that Lanfear had shielded him. If the shield goes away when the person who placed it dies, then we know that Lanfear was alive when Asmodean was killed because (a) he would have felt the shield was gone and (b) he would likely have been able to defend himself.
I'm staking my claim, irrevocably, on Lanfear. She had wishes to burn and an axe to grind - Asmodean had taught Rand too much and too well, and she probably blamed him for her failure to destroy Rand just before getting pushed through that door. Her anger was up. She had promised to kill him. She could have somehow magically appeared, straight from Helsinki, and balefired him into vapor. She knew where he was, she knew who he was, she knew he was shielded and she wanted him dead very, very badly.

If the shielder is holding the shield and she dies then the shield will disappear, because her flow of Spirit will vanish too. This happened when Moiraine killed Merean in NS after she was shielded.
If the shielder has the shield tied off, then the weave will sustain its self forever, unless the knot is weakly tied and unravels in time (weak knots last hours at best), or if the shielded person manages to work through the knot and break it. The only exception to this would be if a person who tied off a shield was balefired. This would make the shield vanish entirely if the balefire was of sufficient power.
Lanfear's shield was a tied off and very complex shield that allowed partial access to the True Source. If she died the shield would not unravel, and it would take a monumental amount of balefire to burn back to when she wove it on Asmodean.
