The DO didn't taint saidin purposely, IMO. It was merely the act of TOUCHING him with the Source that tainted it. I don't think the DO was like "oh, hey, saidin is right here. I should taint it."
The exact phrasing from the book is "a backlash of power" from the Dark One at the moment of imprisonment. Because it was only Saidin that touched him, only Saidin was tainted. The DO has NO power to taint the OP at will, and has had no opportunity to taint Saidar. I will agree that the taint was "incidental", but not accidental.
And we do not know that this is the exact way the fight has played out over and over. Just because the conflict of evil vs light IS repeated over and over by the Wheel with LTT as the Creator's champion, doesn't mean the scene plays out the same every time.
Remember, when the AoL channelers drilled into the bore, it was not patched. This exact series of events most likely has never happened before. Shai'tan may have conciously tainted the source, but he did not plan it out. It was his last strike against his enemies at the moment he knew he had failed (albeit temporatily).

No, the DO can't taint the source at will through the Dreadlords.

You are right in not liking it - because I also think it is a crappy explanation.
