I'm not exactly certain what you're saying in that first sentence, sorry. But as to the second, yes, definitely. I don't expect everyone else to share my opinion of a book or series, but in this example I was comparing my own perception of the same story recited in the two languages, so it shouldn't really be a question of my opinion.

I was actually rereading the book when the movies were coming out, and was halfway through The Two Towers when I lost the books. Since I had to replace the book anyway, I took the opportunity to take the English volume (because it included the appendices, which were not included in my original volumes) and the change in quality came as a complete and unexpected
surprise. As such, I can say with absolute certainty that the translation did impact my enjoyment of the story.



I might actually post a rant about it after I finish my semester. But then again, maybe not, rants are not especially valuable aside from entertainment purposes.



I do avoid all translations when I can. I've been reading Don Quixote in English for about a year (I read about a chapter a week, for some inscrutable reason), but that was a gift so I didn't get a choice of language.

As for your recommendation, well... I expect DomA lives closer to Montreal or something, because I live in a region with a strong English influence and I still have a ridiculously difficult time getting Fantasy novels less popular than Jordan/Martin/Goodkind/Brooks. I just started reading Terry Pratchett's Diiscworld series, and I had to wait three months for my order to get in (though, to be fair there was a problem with the edition I'd originally ordered) so I don't know that I'd even be able to obtain it .
