Some publishers manage with three months. Tor, I have no idea. This would vary from book to book anyway.

Last year they got the manuscript in June and apparently this required a sped-up turnaround to make the release date.

Mid-August could mean they are aiming for a december or January release, or maybe they found ways to speed the turnaround and they're aiming for november. They can commit more resources to layout and galley proofing to speed them up, and more priting resources.

But based on last year and the comments by Tor folks that it was tight - and the fact the book is even bigger than TGS (and thus longer to layout, proof and print), it seems more likely we'll see an early 2011 release.

We'll know soon enough. If they are planning a mid-fall release, the book will appear in the fall trade catalogue of MacMillan by summer (but more likely we'll have a release date announced before that, though). If it does not appear, it means they chose to make it a winter 2011 release.

The fact they didn't announce a release date suggests they're still looking at their options.
