I guess this for a few reasons:
1) Desmond just got thrown down a well on the Island, so it makes us assume vengeful motives
2) Locke originally regained his mobility after a traumatic accident - the plane crash
3) We saw a similar shot of his face, post-accident, and it reminded me of right after the crash
4) If nothing else, it makes Locke's story not so über depressing
