Using the right viewing distance, equipment and a good BD edition of a movie, the difference is huge.
Granted, the experience varies for different kinds of movies.
Unfortunately, it has been reported that the LotR BD editions are somewhat lacking in image quality. Should still be a noticeable improvement over the DVD versions, but there will probably be better versions released later on. (And, as someone said, the versions now being released do not include the EE versions.)
I mean I watch HD at my girlfriends house and regular tv at my house and I have never thought "wow, what a difference". I don't see or notice a difference unless they're side by side... so why shell out the $ for something that is so obviously not needed?

It's out today! I don't know about you guys but i am really excited about this. I think it will look fantastic in bluray. Something else i found out, if you purchase it at a canadian walmart you get a really nice replica ring.

No. It doesn't matter what I'm watching. If you put them side by side, I can see a difference. But, unless they're side by side, I can't notice a difference. The only time I see an issue, is using an HD tv, and switching to a channel that isn't in HD, the picture is shit. But, I can watch that on my tv and its fine...
I mean regular picture quality is good. I've never in my life complained about it. Then, something is introduced as "must have" that is hardly noticeable unless they're side by side...
Your mom. That's right. The cat is out of the bag. Your mom.

The third has enough moments of lameness to make me not like it overmuch.
