Because it is a controlled substance in the US, it is very difficult for scientists to use it in tests. This is part of the reason that medical marijuana is still so contentious. No one can do large scale testing of effectiveness. Strangely it is easier to extensive testing on drugs created by pharmaceutical companies with who knows what side effects than it is to do controlled marijuana testing.

over 30 states have laws/statutes allowing research to be performed, but the funding for such research is not being supplied by the federal government. there have been a few studies but mostly on specific situations like effects of smoking pot during pregnancy and post-natal development. but a large-scale study on the effects on the general population is difficult to fund because of the federal government's policies.
