So "The Manchurian Candidate" is still a bit too recent, but I tend not to like older movies

all that much. And you should still see it. It's well-made (good acting, fairly tight story) and offers a lot of insight into certain American mentalities.
Of the ones on your list, I've only seen All About Eve (you know that, of course
and know that I enjoyed it too) and Gone With the Wind (might like it more now that I'm older). I've seen so few other pre-'60s movies that I could probably count them on one hand: 2001, Citizen Kane, Das Kabinet der Dr. Caligari, Spellbound, The Snake Pit. Also throw in a few propaganda films from the Third Reich.
All but for the first two were for a class about the history of madness. Spellbound was actually pretty decent (Ingrid Bergman is lovely, and it's edgy for its time), but I found The Snake Pit disturbing and not enjoyable at all.
I guess, generally speaking, I'm one of those heathens who tends to believe that film-making is an art is a progressive art, ie, it has mostly gotten better over time.
